Three times: past, present and future. We cannot stop time. Everything flows. Everything changes. Us too. Nothing is final in this world.

Three fundamental questions of our existence. What is happening and what can I know? What is our moral duty at this specific historical moment? What can we hope for? All these questions invite us to do mental gymnastics.

How much do we really know about what is happening around us and what situation do we live in? Is what the media tells us a reflection of reality or a construction of it? Will there be a general Third World War? Even Joseph and Mary did not know when they traveled to Bethlehem what awaited them. Even then, times were uncertain.

The prophets encouraged and comforted the people in difficult times. God is coming to save us. Do we know the last sentence of the Bible? When we think we are in a hopeless situation, Jesus says: “Maranatha.” I am coming! We may be tired, fed up with everything and desperate. God does not tire. His presence protects us from being overwhelmed with worries to the point that we are paralyzed and have no strength to take even one step.

We want to move forward. We want development, prosperity, comfort, happiness. What weighs us down and makes us immobile? Why are we perhaps stagnating or spinning in a vicious circle? Are we really innovative and solving problems in a new creative way or are we merely imitating outdated and already seen thousand times patterns in new circumstances that have always led us to dead ends?

“Adventum.” Arrival. Year 2025. Nova Gorica and Gorica will be the European Capital of Culture. What will the new ecclesiastical and civil year bring us? How many challenges and opportunities! Is our goal that the residents of both cities connect and respect each other? Do we really want the best for each other? What are the obstacles on this path?

Certainly, the revival of old demons that have caused thousands of deaths on the Slovenian-Italian border in the past should be unacceptable to us. Unfortunately, individuals and some well-organized groups are compulsively, perhaps even with some purpose, doing just that. Will those of us who think differently remain silent in the belief that nothing can be done, that the hatred between the two nations is destined, inevitable and eternal? Is hatred perhaps even desirable and good, and is it our ethical duty to erect monuments to demons? Have we discussed what “borderlessness” and a world without conflicts mean? How will we achieve this? Are we even allowed to think critically about it?

Isn’t the result of concealing reality, conflicts and suffering, indifference to others, political censorship and ignoring the ultimate Goal, even if we disregard incitement to social hatred and violence, in reality, in short, a “world without love”?

I myself have witnessed many beautiful events where sincere cooperation occurs between us. We cannot force anyone to do anything. Everyone makes their own decisions. Everyone decides for themselves whether they want a healthy or unhealthy lifestyle, for vices or virtues, for one vision of the future or another. We rejoice that we are closer to the Goal with every second. We can also remember the future! God reliably fulfills his promises and wants us to be his collaborators. Let us lift our heads up! What does the Child whom we can meet at the end of Advent tell us? Do we even want to meet him?
